Dear Sir I write this note to inform you of my plight
And at the time of writing I am not a pretty sight
My body is all black and blue, my face a deathly gray
I write this note to tell why Paddy’s not at work today
While working on the fourteenth floor, some bricks I had to clear
And to throw them down from off the top seemed quite a good idea
But the gaffer wasn’t very pleased, he was an awful sod
He said I had to cart them down the ladder in me hod.
Well clearing all those bricks by hand, it seemed so very slow
So I hoisted up a barrel and secured the rope below
But in my haste to do the job, I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of building bricks is heavier than me.
So when I had untied the rope, the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
I took off like a rocket and to my dismay I found
That half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down.
Well the barrel broke my shoulder as on to the ground it sped
And when I reached the top I banged the pulley with me head
I held on tight, though numb with shock from this almighty blow
And the barrel spilled out half its load fourteen floors below
Now when those building bricks fell from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel so I started down once more
I held on tightly to the rope as I flew to the ground
And I landed on those building bricks that were scattered all
around.
Now as I lay there on the deck I thought I’d passed the worst
But when the barrel reached the top, that’s when the bottom burst
A shower of bricks came down on me, I knew I had no hope
In all of this confusion, I let go the bloody rope.
The barrel being heavier, it started down once more
And landed right on top of me as I lay on the floor
It broke three ribs and my left arm, and I can only say
That I hope you’ll understand why Paddy’s not at work today.

Cher Monsieur je vous écris cette note pour vous informer de mon sort
Et au moment d'écrire ces lignes Je ne suis pas un joli spectacle
Mon corps est tout noir et bleu, mon visage un gris mortel
J'écris ce mot pour dire pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui
Tout en travaillant au quatorzième étage, quelques briques que je devais effacer
Et les jeter par le haut semblait une bonne idée
Mais le gaffeur n'était pas très content, c'était un sale con
Il a dit que je devais les descendre de l'échelle en moi hod.
Bien effacer toutes ces briques à la main, il semblait si lent
Alors j'ai hissé un tonneau et sécurisé la corde ci dessous
Mais dans ma hâte à faire le travail, j'étais trop aveugle pour voir
Qu'un tonneau plein de briques de construction est plus lourd que moi.
Alors, quand j'avais délié la corde, le canon est tombé comme du plomb
Et s'accrochant fermement à la corde j'ai commencé à la place
J'ai décollé comme une fusée et à ma grande consternation j'ai trouvé
À mi-hauteur, j'ai rencontré le putain de tonneau qui descendait.
Le canon m'a cassé l'épaule au sol il a accéléré
Et quand j'ai atteint le Sommet j'ai frappé la poulie avec ma tête
Je tenais serré, mais engourdi par le choc de ce coup tout-puissant
Et le baril a renversé la moitié de sa charge quatorze étages plus bas
Maintenant quand ces briques de construction sont tombées du canon au sol
J'ai ensuite dépassé le canon alors j'ai commencé à descendre une fois de plus
Je tenais fermement à la corde alors que je volais vers le sol
Et j'ai atterri sur ces briques de construction qui étaient dispersées toutes
autour.
Maintenant que je me suis allongé sur le pont je pensais avoir passé le pire
Mais quand le canon a atteint le Sommet, c'est quand le fond a éclaté
Une pluie de briques est tombée sur moi, je savais que je n'avais aucun espoir
Dans toute cette confusion, j'ai lâché la corde sanglante.
Le canon étant plus lourd, il a commencé à descendre une fois de plus
Et a atterri juste au-dessus de moi alors que je m'allongeais sur le sol
Il a cassé trois côtes et mon bras gauche, et je peux seulement dire
J'espère que vous comprendrez pourquoi Paddy n'est pas au travail aujourd'hui.
